Exploring licensed spectrum for mission critical in-building wireless services

CHARLOTTE, NC and COVINGTON, LA— June 4, 2019 – Airwavz Solutions, Inc., a provider of in-building wireless infrastructure, and Globalstar Inc. (NYSE American: GSAT), today announced that they have agreed upon rights to offer Band 53 for in-building wireless services. Airwavz received rights to lease Globalstar’s Band 53 under the agreement. Globalstar will seek to further develop the spectrum and supporting ecosystem for in-building services and for mission critical applications.

While today’s network topologies, such as DAS, D-RAN, Wi-Fi and fiber-optic networks, support current in-building services, new technologies need to be developed to address the expected explosion of IoT devices and the millions of connections needed for smart-building applications. Globalstar’s Band 53, which received 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) approval in December 2018, is well suited to meet future in-building wireless connectivity demands.

“Massive IoT, Private LTE Networks, Smart Buildings, and Property Technology (PropTech) are only a handful of the use cases that will require advanced wireless infrastructure,” said Mark Horinko, president, Airwavz. “The potential to offer our commercial real estate clients robust wireless services, based on both licensed Band 53 and quasi-licensed Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) is driving us to innovate and breakthrough current business models and technological barriers. Until now, this option really did not exist.”

Globalstar’s terrestrial Band 53 holds physical, regulatory and ecosystem qualities that distinguish it from other 5G spectrum allocations. With favorable propagation characteristics including low interference, high capacity and nationwide availability, Band 53 is ideal to support next generation in-building services as the commercial real estate industry undergoes a technological transformation.

“With FCC authorization, 3GPP approval of Band 53 and the growing support of the ecosystem, Globalstar is primed to offer terrestrial spectrum to enable high capacity indoor and outdoor applications,” said Jay Monroe, Executive Chairman, Globalstar. “We are working closely with Airwavz to deliver the next wave of innovative wireless services.”

Airwavz Solutions and Globalstar will begin pilot programs in the commercial real estate sector in Q3 2019.
